The Nordic Challenge Scholarship Fund

All kids in Teton County should have the opportunity to learn and grow through winter sports. However, the associated costs are overwhelming to many local families. From equipment and instruction to mountain access and travel, winter sports are inherently expensive. Through gifts, grants, memberships and fundraising events JHSC's program fees are subsidizeded by approximately 31%. Although this puts winter sports within reach for many families, it not enough for others.

While JHSC has a general scholarship fund as well as the Wes Barron Scholarship Fund for Alpine athletes and the Brent Newton Memorial Ski Foundation which annually supports Freeride athletes, there has not been an ongoing effort to raise Nordic specific scholarship funds.

The Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club was approached by the Hall family, who was interested in starting a Nordic Challenge. With the help of several families, $2,500 in matching money was raised. To date, the Nordic Challenge has helped JHSC raise $7,500 toward the Nordic Scholarship Fund. The goal of the Challenge is to have a minimum of $5,000 available each year, which is the average amount awarded to Nordic athletes. These funds will be granted to deserving young Nordic skiers in financial need to pay for program fees, equipment and travel.

Our hope is to broaden opportunities for local kids and reduce the financial barrier that limits children from learning and growing through Nordic skiing. This past winter, JHSC granted over $5,000 in Nordic specific scholarships helping nine local families.

Special thanks to Libby and Taylor Hall for their vision and leadership on this project. Thank you also Cathy Kehr & Remy Levy, Polly and Sandy Wakeman and three anonymous donors for creating this challenge opportunity.
