U14 Team

Age for 2016-17 Winter Season

Born 2003-2004
Comprised of 12-13 year old athletes, the U14 Program emphasizes ski racing technique and tactics while continuing to develop basic technical skills. Groups split their time between all-mountain skiing, drills, and gate training. Free-skiing will continue to be a critical avenue for delivery and practice of fundamental skiing skills, and technical development. Athletes will develop the technical and tactical skills of Super G, Giant Slalom, and Slalom.  This program includes a physical conditioning component in the fall, weekly on-snow video sessions. For training purposes athletes will often be arranged in groups of 5-7 athletes per coach to facilitate a productive learning environment, groups are dynamic but are generally based on skill, speed, and social needs. U14 athletes are encouraged to participate in November skiing here at Snow King (in place of Fall Camp!), details to follow. The program will also include extra training at Snow King and JHMR during the December Holiday break from school.

Skill Development Focus

Continued development of all around skiing skills and fundamentals, including big mountain skiing and mountain safety, but with an increasing emphasis on ski racing technique & tactics, drills, & gate training, and increased racing. U14 athletes will incorporate the technical and tactical elements of Super G, Giant Slalom, and Slalom and race Divisionally in all 3 events.  For more information on the Athlete Training System, and program delivery click here.

Races

U14 athletes will be encouraged to compete in 10-20 races per winter.
The JHSC Club Series is a local race series that is a fun introduction to ski racing that designed to provide the opportunity to race locally (day trips), very inexpensive, and open to all.
Within the Intermountain Division the U 14 group will have their own Division-wide race series. JHSC will travel with U14 athletes to this series, which includes a Regional Championship in March. U 14 athletes will have the opportunity to travel to races as a team and without the accompaniment of a parent/guardian. 13 year old athletes will also be eligible for IMD Open Series races.
The choice to travel to races is up to the individual athlete/family, and is not a pre-requisite for participation in the program. For a given age group on an ‘away' race weekend, there will be a group that travels to the race, and a group that remains in Jackson to ski/train. Athletes will have the opportunity for full-time coaching and training (respective to their program) regardless of whether they choose to travel to races or not. And while competition is a stated goal of the program, athletic and personal development is the primary focus.
